helped pull me out of a slump so to speak and just a fun ensemble cast, especially with the audiobook narrator's acting.

I won this book from a goodreads giveaway, and I was very excited to read it. The synopsis was very intriguing to me which was why I entered the giveaway. I meant to read it earlier and just ran out of time because life and college happened.

Before I get into this, I want to preface that I don’t think this is a bad book. I think this was just not to my tastes and I just wasn’t in the right mindset to be reading this. I think someone else would have enjoyed this book very much. I’m just possibly too mind numbed from finals season. However, I feel it is important to give my honest rating and review. This may be subject to change in the future if I ever do decide to read it again, but currently these are my feelings about the book.

My overall opinion of the book: it was okay. I had very high expectations and they just fell short, to be completely honest. I kept feeling like I was meant to feel something about anything happening and I just didn’t.

I had some issues with the pacing and the organization of the novel. The names of the places being things like the “Northern Kingdom” and the “Harbor Kingdom” really took me out of the world of the novel. In a fantasy world with a woman who can talk to the dead I felt like there should have been more inventive names than this.

There was a lot of elements that I wished would be more elaborated on, like how does the wire bring the bones of the dog to life? How does most of the magic in this world work actually? There were so many questions that I felt never were answered. It almost seemed like there was a few books before this that explained everything and I just missed it.

The plot felt like it kept trying to build up and be suspenseful but I could never feel like I cared. This could be because I didn’t find most of the characters that compelling, especially Marra. Though I think her want to help her sister in an abusive situation is courageous, in the end she is just there. Marra doesn’t actually kill the prince herself, like I was hoping she would. In fact, I think the most she does is bring everyone together and everyone else does the work. I kept expecting her to do something, anything, and she mostly just worried about how she didn’t have any skills to do anything and how impossible this mission was. It was frustrating. I’d rather follow Agnes or the dust-wife for an entire novel, because even though it feels like we got scraps about their characters they’re still more interesting to me than Marra.

On that “impossible” mission note, it didn’t feel that impossible. I never felt like there was truly anything stopping them or like they wouldn’t figure it out in time. I was never really worried that they wouldn’t stop Vorling in time. I knew someone would have a solution, most likely the dust-wife.

There are a lot more things I think but I’m just going to make one more final note that I thought that the chicken with a demon inside of her would be more important and that was part of the appeal for wanting to read this book. I was highly disappointed with that whole piece.

Once again, these are just the opinions of a tired college student at the end of finals. And while I feel like I’ve made this sound very pessimistic, I didn’t hate the book! I thought the writing was good just missing something. There was a lot of potential here that fell just short. If you made it this far, I encourage you to just read it yourself and draw your own conclusions. That’s all.
