This is my 2nd T. Kingfisher book I’ve tried and disliked. The first one I forced myself through because it was only a little over 100 pages, and I ultimately gave it a 1 star, but this one is double that, so I’m going to have to DNF.

It sucks, I have FOMO because they seem to be a universally beloved author, but I am never able to connect with their characters or storytelling. My mind has been wandering constantly because I am bored. I also thought this book would be more quirky and humorous what with a demonic chicken and bone dog come to life, but it’s really just been dark and gloomy.

Trigger warning for physical abuse.

Read as part of my read Hugo Award winners challenge. Fun easy read with imaginative elements to the story. Slightly cheesy romance within but was done with some humour. I liked the fact the main protagonist was not the usual teenager coming to age type but older female.

Very simple and easy to read story. It's a nice fairytale that has since comedic elements to it and lots of references to other more famous fairy tales.

I've enjoyed reading it, it's a good read before bed.

“This isn’t the sort of story where the princess marries a prince. It’s the one where she kills him.”

At its core, Nettle & Bone is a gothic fairytale with horror, humor, and pets (albeit unconventional ones, because let’s be honest…we don’t always choose our family, sometimes it chooses us).

Marra, the heroine, is stubborn, determined, and refreshingly imperfect. She’s the kind of princess you can’t help but root for. Her mismatched adventuring crew (a dust-witch, a fallen knight, a fairy godmother, a grave dog, and yes, even a demon-possessed chicken) bring sharp humor that perfectly balances the darker moments.

“She had a dog made of bones, a chicken with a demon in it, and more determination than sense.”

This book is unsettling and a tad morbid, yet threaded with heart, wit, and an unexpected warmth. It’s creepy, cozy,  weird, and niche in the best possible way! Think Grimm’s fairytales meets a haunted petting zoo.

I cannot rate this book high enough. I loved the story, the characters, the fairytale elements, the narrator! Amara Jasper was amazing at narrating this. The voices were so good and not overdone or annoying. I will be searching for more books that Amara narrates.
