An interesting imagining of where the world could be if magic waves started destroying technology. The back and forth of magic to tech is one of the most interesting and unique aspects of this book. The mythology is a little sketchy, world building a little hazy, but all in all the main characters are likable (which I need) and the side characters are fleshed out enough to stay interesting.

The main character is 'powerful' in an undefined way; she's a fighter, independent, strong and written well. There are shape changers, magic users and vampire masters as side characters with a smattering of 'normal' folks.

I'd have kept on with this series regardless, as I've heard so much about it, but the first book is pretty average. I actually started this book ages ago (8+years?) in a book store but didn't buy it because it didn't catch me. This time I found it more engaging and of course the Kindle makes a series so easy to get!

I'm not normally an urban fantasy person, but this was really good.

As far as first novel in a series goes this was a good one. It laid out the setting, the main players, some potential conflicts down the road, and established Kate as a hero we could rally behind. I won’t say the plot was anything new for urban fantasy, but it was serviceable and made me want to read more installments.

So mission accomplished.

I can see why a lot of people like this book but for me it left too much unexplained. It’s tough getting the balance right between world building and keeping the plot moving and there just wasn’t quite enough there for me so I felt confused a lot. The plot was intriguing but not enough for me to continue
