This book explores a women’s struggle with early motherhood. I thought it was written really well in a stream on consciousness kind of way, so much so that it almost felt a bit claustrophobic at times.

However although I could empathise with her struggle I  just couldn’t really connect with the struggle of motherhood because I’ve never been through it. I only read this book cause it was on the women’s prize shortlist and so I don’t really think I was the target audience but I’m sure mothers would find it very relatable.

I think I will understand this more physically once I have kids, but damn isn’t this just so well done. Fully understanding that this is one mother’s perspective - effected by sleep and a feeling of abandon - yet it still being respected as real as it is to her. The husband may not be as evil as she perceives him, but her perception means something. The isolation she must feel. The empathy in this book is breathtaking it makes me want to read it again now.
