Thank you to Scholastic for sending me a proof copy of this book!
All opinions are my own :)
I actually quite enjoyed this book! I’m a sucker for historical queer fiction so this was right up my street! I loved the setting and thought it complimented the plot really nicely and made for a great concept. I wish it had been executed a bit differently, with us seeing more of the conversation in the book between the boys, but at the same time I like that it actually allows them to actually interact more (although it’s a bit of a will they, won’t they situation).
I loved the narrative voice, I found it so engaging and refreshing and it was actually really funny at points!
I do have a couple of gripes though. For some reason I just didn’t like Electra, it felt really out of place and kind of like it had been tacked on and didn’t make sense in the story.
I’m also not a fan of how the ‘will they, won’t they’ was handled in this book. Normally I like it if it’s written well, but this just felt kind of frustrating.
And I know this may seem really petty, but I’m not a fan of real people on book covers.
Overall though, this was a really great read that I would definitely recommend, particularly to fans of Simon vs the homo sapiens agenda and It’s a Sin
