Really quite special. For fans of The Yearbook by Holly Bourne, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, and Simon V the Homosapien Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

Really powerful read and made me reflect on my own schooling through the 90s
A beautiful story completely ruined by its narrative style.
Half-autobiography, half-TV screenplay — stuffed with meta-commentary and 'Jim Halpert looking at the camera' (or outright winking) — let’s just say the writing was not what I expected when I picked up this book. I was excited for a Simon vs the Homo Sapiens equivalent: after all, both have the same premise.
And then, there were footnotes (footnotes!) such as:
Well, here's me, the inevitable disgruntled Goodreads reviewer: it just wasn't as funny as the author thought that was. It was downright infuriating.
Furthermore, the TV screenplay concept is forgotten halfway through, while the autobiographical elements can't withstand any scrutiny when the novel (1.) is structured like a bloody novel, (2.) has unrealistic and over-the-top characters/events throughout.
What a disservice the narrator was to what could have been such a lovely coming-of-age story.
* This is the quote that truly boiled my piss and made me knock one more star off.

“I absolutely hated the way SJG constantly ‘spoke’ to me during this book. He’s so annoying. I hated Noah Can’t Even too and don’t get me started on Jack from Heartbreak Boys. One star.” (Inevitable Amazon review) *

Oh, this was beautiful.
It was such a stunning, well written, wonderful read, and definitely my favourite Simon James Green book so far.
Something that I especially adored was that it was set in Lincoln (UK), which is where I went to University. The parts of the book set there absolutely spoke to me. It was like a hug reading about my old home and a place that I just admire so much. SJG, mega points from me for that choice
