Adrian Tchaikovsky is great, as always in creating and describing unique alien ecology and life.  The premise involving totalitarianism feels very relevant.  However, the first hand account with relatively little dialogue makes the story drag a bit and the characters not shine as much as I might wish.  Of the 6 Tchaikovsky novels thst I have read, this is probably my lesst favorite, though it is still very good.

coulda been a short story.

enjoyable overall, interesting ideas about humanity and the nature of life and connection and whatnot. loved the ending, but felt repetitive and dragged out in a lot of places. like we get it, the government is bad. succumb to the hivemind already.

When you are using an unreliable narrator, if you make him a narcissist who treats everyone else as one dimensional side characters, it doesn't matter how great the world building is, most of the characters are one dimensional side characters.

It's quite possible that I enjoy this book more because of how deals with a galaxy of human's riven by fascism. That fact is, though, that Tchaikovsky is great at many things, and one of those is his ability to address contemporary issues without being simplistics or grating.

And, of course, he can right an amazing story.
