i think i quite understand why this novella receives various of different reviews from readers who expected something quite bombastic seeing as ali hazelwood literally NAILED it in the love hypothesis.
to sum it in one phrase, it was not giving what it’s supposed to be giving.
let me start with what i loved first. i absolutely loved the humour that was put into mara’s character. i think if mara were a real person, we would be the ultimate besties. i see myself in her and but i also wanna slap the shit out of her at times (writing this made me realise that perhaps the people around me has felt the same about me too hahaha!). i don’t know if this is what they call the “sunshine x grumpy” trope. frankly, i have never been the one to favour the idea of categorising books into tropes as much (except for enemies-to-lovers because that was embedded in my head from way long ago, it’s basically a default programming system in my brain now) but liam’s “grumpiness” truly did annoyed me so much in the beginning, but oh ho HOOO! his character development was REEEEEAAALLLY good! i loved it so much like yassss we love a tolerable king!
as usual, i loveeeee hazelwood’s writing. she really showed what she’s got to offer to romance readers through the love hypothesis and she deserved all the praise that she got after the publication of that stunning stunning book. perhaps because this is a novella, it lacked the spark that the love hypothesis had in my personal opinion. the romance and spice felt rushed to me. i feel like it could’ve been developed much more better than whatever that was. it was enjoyable but it was not as pleasant... you know what i mean? it’s pretty hard to describe in ways that you’ll feel what i feel but nevertheless, it was overall still quite the enjoyable read.
it’s short and somewhat sweet, perfect for any of you readers who are looking for something easy to get through to pass by time or simply to feed your book loving self on busy days.
definitely will be reading the next two novellas!
