Love a good fairytale retelling. This one was a cool futuristic twist on Cinderella. Can't wait to read the rest in the series that looks to tie in other fairytales. Reads YA.

DNF @ 50% :*(

Oh I don't know what happened here but this just wasn't working for me.
I wasn't really connecting with the characters or the story
Spoiler It didn't help that I guessed very early on who & what Cinder was so then later on in the story the "big reveal" just didn't excite me

Also it was very detail heavy at times which had my eyes glazing over & skimming.
Maybe I'm not in a YA Dyso state of mind right now.
Oh Well.....NEXT!!

Setting/World Building: 4/5
Main Character: 5/5
Other Characters: 5/5
Plot: 4/5
Writing: 4/5
Triggering/Issues: 5/5 (None)

AVERAGED TOTAL: 4.5 out of 5, rounded to 4.

Don't let the lack of a fifth star fool you, this was a REALLY good book. I knocked it down one star, mostly because many of the main plot elements were incredibly predictable; I figured out pretty much all the twists within the first 10-15% of the book or so. But that far from ruins Cinder, to be honest. First of all, the world is incredibly inventive. A retelling of Cinderella set in futuristic China, featuring a cyborg female lead and an evil Queen from the moon? Sign me up, please!

Cinder is amazing, she manages to come off as a teenager without being irritatingly so; i.e., her teenaged desires are nicely balanced within the plot and much more important things. Her "evil step-mother" is suitably evil, perhaps a bit too evil, but it works within the plot, and I enjoyed having at least of the step-sisters be nice. The love interest, Kai, is delightfully not annoying as well, and I look forward to seeing more of him in depth... even if I was a bit disappointed in his choices towards the end, haha. I do think some of the world-building could be fleshed out a bit more, it seems to be a bit basic but for now it works.

The best qualities of this book are in it's inventiveness and it's writing, both brilliant, which sweep you up into the story and make you not really care that the reveals are telegraphed far in advance. If the second book is just as good, I'll still love it, even more so if the author gets better at not telegraphing the surprises! So so glad I picked this up!

I was super bored rereading this but I remember adoring it as a preteen so I’m giving it 4 stars because I think it’s a great book for the intended age group
