I absolutely loved this book. I read Modern Faerie Tales earlier this year and absolutely loved the way that Holly Black wrote about the fey and I adore the way she writes enemies to lovers. Normally, I am not a big fan of the bully love interest. I normally do not vibe with someone who is just needlessly cruel to the person they end up with but I'll admit it, I'm a simp for Cardan.
The Cruel Prince is centered around Jude Duarte. When she was a child, her parents were murdered by a redcap general by the name of Madoc, who also happened to be the biological father of her older sister, Vivi. He was not exactly happy with Jude's mom for absconding with his baby. Madoc takes Jude, her twin, Taryn and Vivi back to Faerie with him where he raises them as his children.
I loved the start of the book and how it had almost a sort of 'faerie high school' vibe to it. I am a sucker for high school drama and basically all of the scenes with Jude and Taryn and Cardan and his gang were like the faerie version of it and I was living. I loved watching Jude come into her more violent tendencies. As an angry girl myself, I really resonated with her. I loved that she wanted to prove that she was better than the fey and it eventually turned into becoming worse than them.
At first I hated Cardan. I wanted to beat him up but by the time Jude had him tied up in the Court of Shadows basement I was grinning like a moron. I loved the little mystery that was in this as well with the whole "who poisoned Liriope?" Loved the missing heir plot and I'm curious to see how it develops. I also can't wait to read how Cardan is going to torture Jude in the next book.
The Locke/Taryn/Jude story was so upsetting and I really did feel bad for Jude but I also felt like she should have known better. I just could tell something was off about Locke and I felt like she should've been able to sense it too. I'm really not a fan of Taryn and I think she was a terrible sister to Jude but then again I'm seeing this all from her eyes so maybe Jude wasn't such a good sister to Taryn either.
Idk, either way I loved this book. It was highly entertaining. Very well written. For the first time basically all year(with the exception of [b:Nettle & Bone|56179377|Nettle & Bone|T. Oh, it was such a breath of fresh air.

I really don't get the hype - I shan't be reading the rest of t series. 1. Why is the love interest basically a school boy who bully's his crush? That's not cruel, that's immature and overdone trope for a ya. 2. Why do we jump jarringly between a medieval fairy Court to Target, malls and skinny jeans? 3. Why do we have a chapter that literally just bulletpoints backstory when it literally could have just been weaved into the plot?

The Cruel Prince lives up to its title. It’s delightfully wicked and fun and full of twists.
I love Jude. She’s such a different leading character to what I mostly ready.
I definitely recommend this book. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is that I couldn’t really get into it in the beginning but couldn’t put it down towards the end.
I think it was really, really hyped too. Definitely worth going into with an open mind and not thinking too much about others opinions.
