Cruel prince is one hell of a book. I'm saying that in a good and bad way.

The plot somehow felt linear, we knew where the story would go. I can't explain it well but the promises, the deals, and the truths– they secured a story with a narrow input proportional to the output. The only time i thought there were multiple plausible endings to choose from was when Taryn had the crown in her hands.

Additionally, the other characters aside from Jude felt like white noise. I'm all for the badass, villain, scheming protagonist but it was too focused on Jude and her ideals to get me immersed on the full scenes being played out as well as the characters. Vivi's got a girlfriend in the mortal world, and Taryn and Locke were irrelevant in the end. The love triangle was filter, the bullying was filter, and even Valerian's death was filter; used only as a sort of awakening of Jude's limitless potential.

The chapters before chapter 25 felt like I was listening to a villain babbling their backstory before turning on the switch to my electric chair and execute me. It was driving my boredom and then SHOCK and then smooth sailing.

The sister drama was to keep the whole "self vs self: Would I belong here more?" dilemma throughout the end. I'm fine with that one. Cardan was the only one we get a seemingly deeper glimpse of his life. And I didn't like how it was served on one go– on a silver platter. This was how every question and mystery accumulated was pieced together in only a single chapter until a new mystery came and it was also put together quickly.

On a side note, the morbid and corruptness in this book was absolutely refreshing. The casual murder and joyous laughter residing in the same space will really remind you that this *is* faerie, a world entirely different from the mortal world due to its "fictional" nature, but ironically similar in terms of how politics works.

I must also add that it was such a sweet taste to my tongue to witness Jude and Cardan absolutely hating each other, but not to the point of wanting to kill each other that it would ruin their amusement. It was to the point that they just angrily made out to punish each other. That scene has me on a chokehold, I swear.

that's about it! my first read of cruel prince. it's not like im going to drop the book though. people have told me that it gets better in the sequel so i'm really hoping for that. my review will probably change if i get a chance to read this again but for now, we'll see lol,, ADIOS ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

Book published in 2018 and still as famous as ever. I understand why because the universe is crazy. The story is well written and the characters are well integrated into the fantastic universe.
Jude is just a warrior, a strong woman ⚔️
Cardan is very mysterious and we love thatttt

I LOVE THIS. Kinda had a low expectation so maybe that’s why is was so shocked cuz it broke all of my expectations. And liked that the romance isn’t the main focus and I was so happy with everything else. Felt like i was living inside a tree, connecting with nature and speaking to animals while reading (don’t ask I know it has nothing to do with the plot)

This series is dark, cruel, and utterly addictive. My main criticism arises from my own prior expectations: I had heard so much about the romance that I expected these books to focus a lot more on it. Instead, what I got were dark fantasies that focus on the transition of power and how it is wielded against those who don't have it. With a teeny weeny smidge of romance.
These novels are so rich in world building that the characters and magic felt almost tangible. The characters themselves are complex, driven and fascinating to follow. All of this creates a series that is addictive, compelling, but still I struggle to say that I 'loved' them. Will I read on? Yes. Will I recommend them to other readers who like dark fantasy? Yes. Without hesitation. Take from that what you will.

yeah yeah. not great not terrible. i will be reading the next one.
