If there was now diversity, this would have easily been 5 stars. I loved the story and the twists. Most were predictable but there was one in particular I didn’t think about and was shocked by. The story felt like a mix between Only Murders in the Building and Twin Peaks
(the secret club/trafficking aspect)

I think this would be a really fun aspect for the author to play off of (Jess solving ~mysteries~).

The main gripe I have other than lack of diversity is the protest portion of the story. It doesn’t add anything interesting to the story nor is it necessary (imo).

Yet another Lucy Foley book I devoured in two days. I love how she’s able to set a tense atmosphere from the first pages, even a cat jumping up suddenly feels really creepy. This book has a different premise than The Hunting Party or The Guest List, in that we do know who’s murdered
(although it turns out we don’t after all)
so we follow mostly Jess as she investigates. We get the viewpoints of other characters too, but Jess’ sections is where the plot really progresses. It felt more like a typical crime novel this way. The author tried to keep tension throughout this book, though the lack of any quieter moments meant this dwindled after a while. The middle section feels a lot less tense than the first and last sections of this book. Still, this was a really enjoyable read. Everyone’s flawed (and very frisky for some reason) and the personalities felt very vibrant.
I do wish the concierge would’ve been explored further. Where’s she off to, and why would the family even need one in the first place? For this genre and the constant tense atmosphere I expected a very dark ending. This ending was a lot more positive, and came very abruptly. I don’t know how Jess managed to find finances for a trip abroad, or a studio to say the least, and why would Ben even want to stay after all that’s happened? Wouldn’t it have been nice to stay together for a while longer?
Still, all in all I had a really good time reading this.

I've seen Lucy Foley's books all over the place. I've had The Hunting Party sitting on my shelf, but The Paris Apartment is the first of hers I'm finally reading. The setting was too perfect, I couldn't wait to read the others first. All I can say is that she is a master of twists! They're subtle and logical rather than a come-from-behind approach that has you scrambling back to the earlier pages (at least in this book). While I had some correct hunches, none of them played out like I could have imagined. The book itself was more vulgar than I like, which made it uncomfortable for me at times, but those parts were fortunately brief aside from strong language. The depth of the mystery made up for it and I finished it in roughly a day.

Though I can't say I liked any of the characters, I could sympathize with most of them at one time or another. They were flawed and human, most of them with a distinct story behind them and bringing the plot together. Very well done!

I liked how fast paced this read was. If I hadn’t hit a slump, I imagine I would have finished it in 2 days. Beyond that, I sorta get the feeling that I’ll be struggling to remember character names and plot points in a couple of months. I think this may be a me-problem, but I really ate how quickly mysteries and thrillers get wrapped up at the end. And what were meant to be complex characters really shaped by shared and individual traumas felt somewhat shallow and unrefined. The note at the end almost caused my eyes to roll permanently to the back of my head. 3.5 ⭐️s.
