Pete the Cat is wearing his favorite shirt that has 4 buttons, but not for long! As each button pops off Pete doesn't fret and he just sings a song. When he;'s all out of buttons to count, he's still got a belly button.
A great read aloud, especially for math/subtraction.

I just absolutely adore Pete the Cat’s books. This particular book is great to teach young students counting and subtraction. “Buttons come and buttons go” is a great phrase to let children know to not sweat the small stuff. I read this book as an Animated Book on Youtube and it was very fun to listen to the songs as well.
Pete is always a hit with the kids, but this is the only "sequel" that I really like in the Pete the Cat series, so I'll do it in storytime. I like the addition of the math in this one. The kids love the song in this one, too, and it's fun to watch them "seat" dance with me.

Kids seem to love Pete the Cat but I can't exactly pinpoint why. Is it easy math they can feel successful with? Is it the surprise revelation that he still has a button (his belly button) after his four groovy colored buttons have flown the coop? I don't know. It's not jarringly funny but is entertaining and has a good message (kind of like a picture book of Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop"). Regardless, kids like it and that makes it a solid story time selection.
Pete the cat loves his groooovy buttons, but they keep poping off his jacket! oh no! Does Pete cry? Goodness, No! Buttons come and buttons go, he just keeps singing!
The kids always love this story when I read it at storytime and it has a lot of great elements for a group of toddlers or preschoolers. It has repetitive elements and songs that they can catch on to and sing/speak along with. It has interactive questions you can ask the kids as you read, and they really enjoy being able to yell out the answers (re: Did Pete cry? Goodness, no!). It also includes counting and early addition practice in a way that is fun and engaging for young readers. This is one of my go to stories for sure!
