Just when you think the Pete the Cat series can't come up with something new... I had to admit, when I saw the title of the book, I didn't think it would be as good as the other two books in the series. At first, I just liked the catchy tune (as we read the book, we listened to the song on the computer. I highly recommend listening to the books and downloading the songs. They really enhance the books! And it's free!). But the book threw me at the end... I didn't think that's where it was going to go! And if it made me laugh, it's going to give young readers a case of the giggles!

Auditioning this for some little sweet friends. Lost buttons are definitely up my alley!

LOVE IT. ALMOST as much as the first (and I say almost because NOTHING can top the first discovery of Pete.)

Listened to this book on audio even though goodreads doesn't have an audiobook edition.

In my storytelling class, another student did a delightful presentation of this picture book. I loved her expressiveness and tone, and the story's great rhythm makes it a good read-aloud, but I can't say that I enjoyed the book itself. The book teaches basic counting and arithmetic fundamentals, but the illustrations aren't my style, and the anti-attachment message isn't one that resonates with me.

Pete says that buttons come and go, and carries on with life without caring that his buttons are popping off. This can be a good message in some contexts, since it's important to teach children to understand and accept change and loss, but the message that Pete shouldn't cry, and shouldn't care, isn't one that applies to every child or every scenario. Also, this book ignores the environmental impact of Pete's ways. If I were writing a story like this, I would have it end with Pete sewing his buttons back on and counting up to four again.

I love Pete the Cat, and this book is my favorite! When I read it at storytime yesterday, one of the kids kept saying "that guy is really something!" That about sums it up. Pete is a groovy dude who understands how life should be lived!

"Did Pete cry? Goodness, no! Buttons come and buttons go.” Absolutely one of my favorite children's picture books. Great message for all ages, don't sweat the small stuff. ❤

Can you tell I was working in the kids department? Pete the cat was pretty groovy.
