A childhood favourite, I remember that this was one of my English lit books in school.

…I love this book. Micah and I started reading it together and it was a beautiful time and this has been a precious book. I have laughed out loud, cried, and been struck by the deep beauty and truths within the book. I think that this is now one of the most meaningful books to me both for the story and the place it held in the last few months of my life.

"... If you love the story, you are clearly on the side of the Hobbits..." -- from J. Aleksandr Wootton's Goodreads review

I can't think of a better way to put it. I loved this book before I quite understood what it was I loved. Now I know.

- It was Ratty's exhaustive (and exhausting) picnic basket list
- It was incorrigible Mr. Toad being so bad at laundry that his disguise is uncovered and he's thrown off a barge
- It was Mole scenting his home on a winter night and crying for it
- It was the mysterious seafaring stranger that nearly swept Rattie away with poetic descriptions of merchant vessels
- It was Badger's warm, shabby hole (smelling of fried ham) after the cold and terror of the Wild Wood
- It was the mystic wonder of the encounter with the Piper
- It was the commonsense position that fields, hills and woods, poetry and walking songs, meals shared with friends, and slow summer days are inherently Good.

Read it out loud to your kids. Read it out loud to your adult friends and family. Read it when you need to be reminded how to live like a hobbit.
