Jennifer is a god when it comes to writing. NEVER disappoints! :)

Also there is a song by my fave band called ANIMAL by THE CAB. It so reminds me of Hunter and dem steamy scenes... woooo! ;D You should listen to it...
Also "Intoxicated" by The Cab... X)

What can I even say? Jennifer has an innate ability to get me hype for a series. I'm supposed to hate the Arum, but here I sit wanting to call dibs on Lore. He's mine, ladies, and he hasn't even done anything yet. I have to be honest, I'm still a lux girl at heart (I LOVE YOU, DAEMON!), but only for the good ones. I was like a giddy fool when the story had those crossover moments, and the setup for Origin has me considering committing a felony to get my hands on an arc. Can I please get a 12 hr. purge?! (Reference to the new Ethan Hawke movie, duh!)

3.5

Loved it.

At first I was Luxen team all the way..we hate Arum right?? But then..OMG...I really do hate Luxen..what do they think they are...?? But ok..it's not al black and white...we have a lots of gray :)
I really did love Hunter..and Serena I would just slap her sometimes..stay in the room..means..stay in the room..not just wander around..

I would like some mora Hunter please..and his two brothers :)

SPOILERS WILL BE CONTAINED IN THIS REVIEW. DO NOT WANT, DO NOT READ.

Right, now we’ve got that out of the way, I’m going to preface this review with a statement: after I shut my old book blog down I *did* say I wouldn’t write any more reviews.

But then I read this book, and hoo boy do I have thoughts! I came pootling over to Goodreads to see what everyone else had to say and was met with a wave of excellent reviews and I had to wonder; was I reading the same book? Anyway, as a result I figured I should share my personal thoughts.

So, for anyone familiar with fan fiction and the ‘Cabin Fic’ trope, this is sort of like reading the worst cabin fic ever. Literally, girl gets essentially kidnapped by government-employee alien, locked away in cabin and despite the fact he’s generally pretty awful (more on that later) they fall in love and have lots of sex.

Literally, that’s it. That’s the storyline… except there are a whole bunch of things I couldn’t deal with and I honestly should have DNF’d this book several times throughout the course of listening to the audiobook in my car, but I am not one to be defeated. I’ve read listened to JLA’s other works in the past (although admittedly not the Lux series, to which this was a spin off… yeah, I know, but this one was free as part of my Audible subscription so I thought I’d give it a go as a standalone) and I’ve found some enjoyment. As such, I kept waiting for this to get better and it just… didn’t.

So, what were my issues?

Okay, so firstly, Serena gets essentially kidnapped and taken into hiding with Hunter (who is an Arum - an alien race) because her friend Mel (who has been killed) saw some Luxen (another alien race) and overheard some things she shouldn’t have.

Now, you’d think that Serena would be a bit bothered about the trauma of watching her friend die, or being ripped away from her entire goddamn life… but no. She’s more bothered about the ~mysterious~ Hunter and his sex appeal. Right, yeah, okay… but it gets worse.

The first two days that Serena is with Hunter he literally knocks her out by ‘feeding’ on her without her consent and when she comes to he’s lurking in her bedroom and has taken her trousers off.

What?

Yeah, exactly.

What else could have happened when she was out cold? I dread to think, especially given some other things Hunter gets up to.

Now, they apparently have some apparent sexual tension - not sure if I missed it due to my asexuality but I really didn’t feel like that was the case - which clearly leads to Hunter touching her up whilst she’s asleep. Yep folks, you read that right. It’s presented as being ‘sexy’ and gave Serena pants-feels in her dreams but honestly in the real world that isn’t going to be seen as anything except sexual assault.

Ew.

Should have DNF’d there, right?

But I didn’t. I’d got too far in.

The one thing this book had going for it is that the heroine(and I use the term lightly) isn’t virginal so that felt a bit less icky than it could have, but the sex was… well. As I’ve said I listened to the audiobook rather than reading the book so I can’t give whole quotes which really is probably for the best or this review would be even longer. But the phrase ‘womb twitching’ and lots of references to twitching cocks and touching cores and whatever seem to stick out in my mind. I mean, hats off to anyone writing smut, because I couldn’t do it - but the womb twitching had me whispering “What the Fuck?” In my car.

Whilst we’re on the subject of language choice, Hunter also swears like a sailor in a storm which I suppose is to perpetuate his ‘bad boy’ image, and he also uses the word “vagina” as an insult which… no.

Ladies, let’s think of what exactly our vaginas are capable of - personally I think they’re amazing. Certainly not the insult that this book makes them out to be.

Besides that it’s fairly misogynistic, right? Not sure he called anyone a ‘Penis’ or even a ‘Dick’.

Anyway, at some stage the government catch up with Serena and decide she’s no use and they should kill her. So Hunter kills the dudes and they go on the run.

This is the stage where suddenly Serena remembers that her friend died and might have one important info on the Luxen - so important they’re willing to kill. Bravo, Serena.

So of course, she decides that the sensible thing to do is to go haring off back to Colorado without any of the following things:
- money
-resources
-weapons
-means of transport.
Wondering how she was even planning to get there? Yup, me too.

Anyway, at this stage we also meet arguably the only interesting character in the book - a kid who’s definitely something else that’s not human or Arum or Luxen called Luc. I wish there was more Luc honestly. If there’s more Luc in the Lux Series, I might actually read ‘em.

But all is well that ends well; despite showing no signs of wanting anything other than rough rumpy-pumpy with a nice blond human with nice boobs and swooshy hips, Hunter has apparently fallen in love which is why he’s gone rogue against his previous employers… so of course he’s going with her.

I mean, that wasn’t predictable at all, right?

Anyway, cue some more gratuitous sex scenes and mentions of Hunter’s leather trousers (though really guys, am I wrong in thinking that IRL leather = sweaty balls, not sex appeal? Does nobody remember the Spaghetti Incident?) and then everything gets resolved.

Seriously, I’m sorry for this verbal vomit of everything I thought whilst reading this but sheesh. Not one for me I’m afraid and I actually did a little happy dance when this problematic mess of a book was over.

Would advise skipping this one and trying another JLA novel.

I found it hard to like the main character because he is one of the "bad guys," but I think it is an interesting spin off from the Lux series.
