DID NOT FINISH

This is so very sadly a DNF at about 50%. I was so excited for this, and despite an exciting beginning, I did not like Tommy and Tuppence, merely because they’re too trusting and feel like they get lucky too much. Sorry Agatha :(

4.5 stars

One of my fave Agatha Christie novels so far—maybe even my fave. I had no idea that the first Tommy & Tuppence book took place before they were married as young 20-somethings, and involved a Moriarty-like master criminal named Mrs Brown. It felt more like a cozy spy novel than a cozy mystery, with high jinks. I sort of guessed the solution early on, but I didn’t mind, there were many twists and turns and I second guessed myself multiple times because of it. Just jolly good fun.

Fun

I had never read Tommy and Tuppence before, and it was a fun read. I really enjoyed the humor and the characters.

Of the Agatha Christie books I recently read, this was far and away my favorite. I enjoyed the pacing, dialogue, edge-of-the seat adventure, and while I had two suspects in mind for the notorious Mr Brown, it wasn't until the closing chapters that Mr Brown's identity was revealed. Yes, the actual Mr Brown was one of my two suspects, but it was the uncertainty that kept up the suspense for me.

Years ago we (my husband and I) saw several of The Tommy and Tuppence stories dramatized (probably by the BBC) and shown on our local public television station. I enjoyed the mysteries back then, and it is quite possible this story was one of them. However, if that was the case, it apparently did not deflect from my current reading of the story; so much for memory! (And if I didn't see it dramatized, well then, memory didn't help either way!)

P.S. Yup, memory does play a role in this story. You'll just have to read it to find out how.

I didn't love this book. It was good, well-written, and I was DEFINITELY shocked by the ending, but it just wasn't my favorite. Fine, but I have definitely liked many of her other books a lot more.

Very strong 3.5 stars.

Christie's writing is just not for me unfortunately. I was excited to start this series, but the first half was just off-putting in its almost satirical usage of slang at the time, and the case itself never really interested me until well past the half way point. I'm obviously glad I stuck with it, but I had the baddy picked from his introduction and was really only able to focus on it once I started picturing it as a Hitchcock film mashup.

Mysteries like these are ones I enjoy watching as shows or classic films, but reading them is a bore.
