I love this book. This is a story about people and love and kindness towards others. This story deals with relationships between people and how feelings are expressed towards one another. I feel as if this is a valuable lesson that all children should understand and cherish. There are some very real issues dealt with in the book, including the premature birth of Michael's little sister. There are also elements of science fiction, which will appeal to many readers. How can a winged man not capture the interest of readers? This book is powerfully written and is an easy read though it contains some difficult concepts.

A middle school boy is struggling with his family's move and the fact that his premature baby sister may not make it. He meets a girl next door who is militantly proud of being homeschooled and loves nature and William Blake. It isn't long before a man with wings, suffering and dying, is revealed in Micheal's dilapedated garage. Themes of love and compassion vs. societal institutions like the hospital and school, very lyrical language. Plays with ideas of evolution and angels, spirit vs. form.

This is a teen book, but was written in a style that seemed to be more suited to 4th-5th grade. I would have liked to see the themes and characters more fully explored.

Book Quote:
“What are you?" I whispered.
He shrugged again.
Something," he said. "Something like you, something like a beast, something like a bird, something like an angel." He laughed. "Something like that.”

This books is lyrical, symbolic, and overall just pretty. But I couldn't get into it. Maybe it was just too lyrical, symbolic, and pretty for my mood as I was reading it, but I just didn't get it and I didn't particularly enjoy it. Maybe I'll have to try it again in the future...or myabe I'm just not a David Almond fan.

This is beautiful. Read it to my almost-nine-year-old, frequently (ahem) clearing my throat. We both loved it. The story, the mood, everything.

Wonderful piece of children’s literature. I really enjoy when children’s literature is philosophical and filled with little wisdoms and a lot of magic. This book is no different, though the super fast pacing made it go by in a bit of a blur.
