A fantasy novella that focuses on a boy called Michael. He has a lot going on, he has just moved into a new house that needs a lot of repair/tidying. His newborn baby sister is very ill and has to go back to the hospital a few times., and then he finds someone/something in his garage. Michael befriends his next door neighbour Mina and together they help the something in the garage.
This book is lovely to read, we get the childhood view of stress about his sister. We also the joyfulness that is to be a child and explore. I found his interactions with Skellig to be interesting and the book as a whole just made me feel good. Its a heart warming story and I can see why its a classic.

Well that was a very sweet little story.
Mina was my favorite character. I enjoyed watching her friendship with Michael grow, and getting to see her strong feelings about schooling. :)
The setting and plot were also both fun. I liked this book!

This Printz honor book is one of the best I’ve read all semester. I really, really loved it. 13-year-old Michael’s family just moved to a city in northern England, but his family has larger things that settling in on their minds—his brand-new baby sister is near death. While his parents are occupied with moving in and taking care of the baby, Michael begins exploring the derelict old garage next to the house. He discovers a strange being—part man, part something else there, and tries to help it, even as his sister’s condition worsens. After a little while, he becomes friends with Mina, the eccentric, artistic, idealistic girl next door who is not quite like anyone he has ever known before. Mina’s free-spirited ways influence him to take chances, learn to listen and see in ways he’s never done, and believe in miracles that he never dreamed were possible. I’d recommend it for any and all, ages nine and up.

Read this for a bookgroup for ages 9-12. They all loved it and so did I!
