Black Bull Volume 1: Daredevil of the Wild West! collects five Black Bull stories from Prize Comics Western in the late 1940s.
As you can see by the subtitle, this is one of my #WesternComicsMonth reads. Dick Briefer does the art of the first story and it's okay. The other four stories feature John Severin and Will Elder on the art and they're much better.
The Black Bull, wild west vigilante, is Dale Darcy by day, the lazy, go for nothing son of a rich rancher. Dale is aided and abetted in both of his identities by Egbert, the Darcy family butler. Egbert is easily my favorite character in the book, reminding me of the Batman '66 incarnation of Alfred. The whole book has a Batman feel to it, not surprising considering the setup.
The stories are simplistic and the pulp cheese factor is high but it's a fun little read. Hopefully future volumes are printed. Three out of five stars.
