At first, I didn’t like this book. It took me about 43% for it to start getting into the nitty gritty. I thought the book was going to be about getting to Cass in Brooklyn. BUT it wasn’t and that made it so much better. It wasn’t a story about a girl running to the love of her life. It was a story about a girl finding the want to live, the desire to make a future for herself, and to choose what she wanted her life to be not what she thought others wanted from her. I deeply connected to Avery. I wasn’t sure if I was queer until college. Even then, I questioned the validity of it. Thankfully I did not have all of the religious guilt that Avery does. I also went through a major depressive episode in college. I didn’t go to classes. I didn’t know I should even tell my profs what I was going through. I didn’t want to tell my parents. I didn’t know who or how to reach out. My only big qualm was the ending.
I was sad that we didn’t get to know Theo it one of the meteor. Maybe that meant they all died. Maybe the happy ever after was her being with Cass in the end ready to live out the future. I wanted a happy happy ending though. I wanted to hear (because I was audiobook) “epilogue three months later. Teddy was running around blah blah blah”. But no. We didn’t get that. And that is gonna be on my mind for so so long

Probably would have loved this more when I was a teenager. Still it’s a very captivating story and a good read.
Definitely take the content warnings to heart this isn’t a light book!
sadly the ending fell flat for me. There was so much buildup about this asteroid seemingly unanswered.

“I had always known grief was a type of loneliness, but when I went to college, I learned loneliness was a type of grief.”

If Tomorrow Doesn't Come is an emotional story about Avery, who's suffering from undiagnosed depression. She's not dealing well with college and one morning she decides to end her life. It doesn't end up happening, as an asteroid is headed for Earth and the world only has nine days left before it hits. With so little time left, Avery's going back home to her parents and spending time with her secret crush and best friend Cass. This was definitely a hard-hitting story at times, as it deals with Avery's mental health and fear of coming out to her parents, who aren't the most queer-friendly. Avery has a lot of things she never talked about, but the time to deal with them is running out. We also see glimpses of how the world descends into chaos as everyone is scrambling to go back home and prepare for the end of the world. I wish we'd seen more of the impact the asteroid and impending doom caused in the world. We only get snippets and it was disappointing that the premise wasn't used more.
The ending is ambiguous, which I expected. I was still a bit sad that we didn't even get a hint of  what happened to the world and is it's truly over for everyone.
