I'm over Lena. I just wish she'd stop showing up in books. Don't get me wrong, I love Will Trent and Sara. But I just can't help it, when Lena shows up all of the characters descend into their worst selves. Except Will, but then he's caught between Sara, Lena, and his case. Lena just complicates everything. There was a time when I liked reading from her perspective, but Lena is terminally selfish. And she pushes those she loves away, and I cannot stand how she continues to do it despite being burdened with regret. I hope this is the last one with Lena, there was an appropriate ending, and at least a semblance of Lena learning to be better. And that's what I hope for her, so I can stop reading about her whiny self. Give me strong confident Sara Linton anyday. 4 out of 5 stars.

After the whirlwind of the last two novels, this one felt very slow. I honestly don't enjoy having to read about Lena and despite Karin attempting (?) to redeem her as a character I just do not like her. Just because her bad decisions are 'misguided' does not mean they are not bad decisions.

The franchise is running out of steam, for my money. The pattern of the arch-villain committing brutal crimes only against young women was especially disappointing. Even the Will-and-Amanda origin story wasn't enough to redeem that central plot line. Don't even get me started on the whole merry-go-round of "Will thinks Sarah is mad at him for being dumb and Sarah is sad that Will won't open up to her" that has now been spinning for three books. I guess kudos to Evelyn and Amanda for rising through the ranks in the face of rampant sexism... I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to feel humbled that I get to stand on the shoulders of those two feminist giants. What makes the pill *much* harder to swallow, though, is that the male protagonist (and protégé/pet project to one of the aforementioned feminists) 'fixes' his relationship problems by having a kind of sex that one would be hard-pressed to describe as at all consensual. *shudder* But it's all good, since it ends in emotional intimacy, right? Right?!! Nope.

I couldn't help it I had to give the book a five star rating because it deserved it. Karin Slaughter is one of the few authors who has never lost her edge and still continues to amaze me with the plot and character development. This book see's a return of a familiar character from the early books Lena Adams. A favourite of mine I have to say. As the normally tension between her and Sara Linton erupts you find yourself torn between two great characters like choosing between your best friends.

The story is gripping and the investigation just as entertaining. Although I had my suspicions on who the main villain was this was not confirmed until the last couple of chapters. This is once again an excellent addition to the series which has left me waiting with baited breath for the next.
