I loved the first book in the DI Matt Fisher series Paid In Blood when I read it in 2021, so leapt at the chance to read the follow up. Matt Fisher is an excellent character, blinded in an acid attack he is negotiating a different world and has to fight for his position at work. His DCI is an irritation, trying to get him put on the cold case review team but Fisher wants active cases and bulldozes his way very successfully in to investigate the murder of an elderly woman Margery (Em) Walker, who he knows. The case rapidly escalates when another death follows and Fisher fights to stay on the case and do it his way.

Fisher and Nightingale have a great relationship and the fact that Fisher is blind makes it a really interesting read, far different from the usual police procedural fare. It makes you think and be more aware of your surroundings that’s for sure. I read this in one sitting as I just couldn’t put it down, taken on a twisting dance, the plotting is just great; it is clever and just brilliantly crafted. An absolute cracker of a book! When’s book 3 coming?
