I'll admit I found myself much more interested in the assassin training part of the novel, and less in the stuff in the Old Kingdom, partially because I was a liiiitle distracted by the way Ancient Egypt was being aped in this way where it was like "it's old, it's ancient, it's backwards" and that is a problem that needs to be solved. I mean, I want to be fair, of course. The Discworld as a whole is very backwards-thinking and full of idiots, so it's not like a racial minority has been singled out or anything... I was just a little anxious about the whole "exotic and ancient" take on this land.
However, one of the saving graces of it was that Teppic didn't actually solve the problem on his own, or just because he'd left and found out about the outside world. In fact, it's his sister who ends up on the throne, and it's only with the vital assistance of his ancestors that he's able to save the day, which is a nice little moral lesson about respect for tradition plus progress, and how those two things don't have to be counter to one another.
But I mean come on, this book is just as funny and clever as all the others! Some favorite moments included the camel doing math, the guy who was charging to be a good listener for the philosophers, and the priest narrating the gods fighting over the sun like a sports commentator!

When Prince Teppic was finishing his test to become an official Assassin of the Assassin's Guild the last thing he expected was automatically giving it up to take up the throne and Godhead of Djelibeybi. Brought into the modern world with his years in Ankh-Morpork he stood the entire ancient society of his homeland on its head when he came home. To think that the newly crowned Pharaoh would care about who served under him and that he would want to do a few things on his own?!

That was an explosion of creativity and my face actually hurts from smiling so much.
3 stars. Something about this installment just didn’t draw me in. Definitely my least favorite of the series thus far. It wasn’t bad or anything but it just didn’t have the same charm as the previous books. It is something completely different for the series which is cool but I wish I had more to say about it. It was fine.

Very weird but I loved it a lot.
