A fun time! Not one of Discworld's best, but still fun regardless. The beginning is a bit of a slog, but the last part is fun. I don't like what's done with Pitratchi throughout the whole book, but it could've been worse. I like all the stuff with the pyramids.

I feel like I have yet to stumble upon the book that "made" Terry Pratchett. I started late in the Discworld series with Going Postal, a favorite, and now that I've gone back to read the books in order, I keep waiting to have that "THERE it is..." moment. I'm certainly enjoying the books, and Pratchett's sense of humor, but I have yet to see that plotting brilliance that came along later in the series.
Pyramids feels disjointed, in that we spend a good quarter of the book with the main character at his assassin's school, and then we jump to Discworld's version of ancient Egypt and spend the rest of the book there. I like what Pratchett has to say about religion and tradition, and I can see how the two parts of the story contribute to that commentary, but it was literary whiplash to jump from one to the other. It feels like Pratchett was still trying to figure out how to tie all of his ideas together into a coherent story.
The books are definitely getting better, but I want to find that one book that defines what Pratchett could do. I've heard a lot of good about Guards! Guards!, which is the next book, so maybe I'm one book way from it....

I wanted more assassin, less faux-Pharaoh. I did love You Bastard, though. Plus it's quantum. Amusing, but nothing to write home about. Everyone suggests Guards, Guards! as the place to start, though, so I'm still looking forward to it.
