The Anomaly

This books sucks you in fast and keeps you guessing. I found myself deeply absorbed by this underground world, and the terrible creatures with in. Not to mention the mystery surrounding it all.
I’m usually pretty good at guessing what’s gonna happen next, but this book surprised me again and again. With unexpected twist after unexpected twist.

The characters were interesting and believable, and it didn’t follow the usual patterns, for example (spoiler alert) the girl who antagonizes the man doesn’t then fall for the man.

You also really felt like the author had really done his research even though this was clearly a made up situation you could really believe that something like this could happen. That the seemingly impossible could be possible.

Overall this was a great book by a great author and I look forward to reading more by them in the future.

I really enjoyed this. Didn’t see the twist coming.

A really fun read with lots of plot (and cavern) twists and turns. Loved Ken, who was the cool/grumpy Uncle type, and who I think I would like to be when I grow up.

In general the setting was great and made for some high stakes shenanigans. The mystery of the cave was unexpected and kept me on my toes.
SpoilerPerfect spheres and pyramids? From who? Or what? I still really want to know.

Highly recommend to anyone looking for an adventure that will consume a few lazy afternoons!

Look, I'll be real with you: this is not really a horror book. For a bunch of you, you won't care. Some of you will care way too much. Most of you won't be reading this review anyway. But again: this is not a horror book. This is an adventure book. And my 4 stars should tell you that if I wasn't head over heels in love with horror then this would be my genre of choice. So really any blend of the two is gonna be filled with my own bias.

This book was put into my sphere by a post of r/horrorlit about archaeological horror. $20 and 4 isolated weeks later this book hit my mailbox and I was right in. The characters are not strong (except for Nolan and maybe Ken), the plot, while it does get more unique, is not blow your mind good, the setting is underused and not expanded on much BUT I DON'T CARE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT IT'S FUN. Nolan and Ken feel like Drake and Sully from Uncharted all blended up with X-Files and Indiana Jones, the lore is fun and feels very real, the perspective is immersive and did I mention the fun?

I can see EXACTLY why opinions are so divided here. This book is both average and incredibly fun. It's like that feeling where you have to watch a boring movie at school during class but the movie is good because it's more fun than the class. Look, to me this book is a no brainer if you are not super snobby about your reads. I have the same critiques, problems and frustrations that a lot of people had here, but in the end I just didn't care because the book was fun and I didn't pick out the entire plotline 30 pages in. In fact while I felt on the right track, the book really did catch me off guard more times than I feel comfortable admitting.

This book is a ride through and through. It's the monster of the week on X Files, it's the coaster with no line at an amusement park, it's the day off school on photo day and you have 5 pimples too many, it's a sleep in on a Thursday when you're up too late on Wednesday and god dammit Michael it's gonna be 4 stars from me.

This was an excellent archeological adventure in the vein of Preston & Child. If you can suspend your disbelief a little bit, you'll have a great time.

Solid adventure novel with a dash of sci-fi.
