Rembert's memoir is full of amazing stories from his life and many times with an accompanying piece of art that he created. I couldn't put it down. His stories are fascinating. I ended up reading this on my computer using the kindle app so I could see his artwork in color.

This is a transcript of a course taught by the two authors. As with any university course, the profs frequently refer to assigned readings - there were 52 for the course - and prior discussions. Needless to say, it's not possible to fully follow each line of thought in this context. It was hard going. Without the readings, any readers of the book under age 50 (or previously unaware of world news) would need at least some background on US interventions and covert actions in Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, Chile, Vietnam, etc.

Nevertheless, it introduces a good range of themes, and historical events from 1945 to the present that illustrate the themes - how government and business collude to protect capitalism (i.e. the use of resources and labour to derive profit). For example, military force may be used to prop up dictators, to ensure that the country's resources flow freely to investors. Environmental and other regulations (such as worker health and safety) can be impediments to greater profits. And so on.

Now I need to go back and find a primer on capitalism and social change.
