Enjoyed the writing style and the themes- I understand the reception this book has received, but it just wasn’t really my taste.

I was really disoriented by the writing style at first, but once I got to Dominiques chapter I was really invested. The characters range from being infuriatingly problematic to charming and challenging. Such a wide range of characters and I loved that you saw echoes of the different characters in the subsequent chapters.

The writing style is like spoken word, it is emphatic and confusing to follow in the beginning, but past the first few chapters it really flows and doesn’t disorient you anymore. The narrative style reminds me of Homegoing or Under the Rainbow, where you are taken through various characters through a timeline to piece together how all these characters connect. I really enjoyed it in the end.

UGH so good! More than deserving of all the acclaim. The characters feel like living, breathing people, while also cutting clear strokes about real world issues. Highlights for me were Amma, Yazz, Carole, and Bummi. Less impressed with Shirley, Winsome, and Penelope, though even then, the way they tie into the themes and story is wonderful. Just a fantastic read. The style works so, so well.

As soon as I finished the last sentence, all I wanted to do was start again from the beginning.
Such a deeply emotional, clever and captivating book! As someone who at a first, superficial glance has little in common with the characters, I still found it so easy to relate to the profoundly human topics explored here and have to admit I learned a lot about myself. Would recommend to anyone - even though I was first stirred away from this by a friend who didn't like it.

Such a fascinating book, beautifully written and covering many important, yet challenging topics. What also stands out is that there are no points or exclamation marks, as well as direct dialogue - luckily I got accustomed to it after 100 pages or so.
Also massive respect for finding an immaculate way of connecting so many stories and characters ( you’ll get the relationships after a while)!

writing this a week later, so these are my thoughts after sitting on this for a minute. it took me some time to get used to the writing format but once more characters were introduced i started to enjoy it! i think it really reflects how different people's lives are, and how people, particularly black women, don't fit in a box. we're all trying to make it out of this life a little differently, and our ancestral lines run so deep. i enjoyed how deep we get into each woman's life and their decisions based on the events that happen to them.

one thing that really rubbed me wrong was the ending when we were reading about amma's daughter's father (forgot their names omg so sorry). i still don't understand why the conclusion revolved around him, or at least the very first part of it. i was like.......why are we reading a whole ass book about women and i'm suddenly meant to care about the expansion on this man's life lol.

4.5 stars, because the characters were a bit confusing, there were too many for me to follow, but i liked that they were all connected somehow.
