Science in a narrative - love these characters, and excellent focus within an amusing story

I loved the picture books with Ada Twist and the other characters in them, and am very impressed to see the transition to chapter book for older children, with superb age-appropriate science included.

It can't be easy making science accessible to the primary market in fiction, but I enjoyed reading this and my 8-year-old could follow the story and science concepts on the whole as well.

This is the second in a series, but I hadn't read the first and I don't think children will miss anything. Ada Twist, Scientist, is a girl who can't stop asking questions. One leads to another, and science fascinates her. She ponders the chicken and egg question, why hot coffee smells stronger than cold coffee.. and when her friend Rosie's uncle gets carried away in his pantaloons by the wind - how to get him down??

The real science is discussed, with real scientific terms, lots of diagrams (eddies, hot air rising), so while enjoying the story of a flying Uncle, readers will also be getting a good dose of learning.

It's spread into very short chapters, is very visual with plenty of David Roberts' illustrations and diagrams. Ada is curious and kind, smart - and keeps stealing her brother's things for her experiments. She's not just for female readers, but will of course be a great role model.

Great series, and wonderful for parents and teachers alike to use with their own Questioneers.

For ages 6-10.

Cute early chapter book with some good science in it. The helium pants are a bit weird, but most of my kids didn't mind.

Now, that was a funny book!

Ada's friend, Rosie, has an uncle who has floated away because he took a "walk" in helium filled pants. Now it's up to Ada, Rosie, and their fellow Questioneer, Iggy, to get Uncle Ned down. Ada and her friends use their scientific knowledge of gases and their indomitable try-again attitude to save the day.

Along the way Ada learns some important lessons about respecting other's property, working together, and how asking for help can be an important part of being a hero.

Thumbs up for any children’s book that incorporates science! And I especially enjoyed the part in this one where Ada struggled to translate everything that was going on in her brain to her words when she was explaining to her friends and her mom - I’ve not seen a children’s book tackle that before and it was great. And, as always, David Roberts does the best illustrations ever. :)

Lillian liked it enough to check out another book in the series of her own volition, so that's great. The drawing and pictures are fun, and it brought the science together in a fun way.

I really, really want to love this series. Once again I enjoyed the beginning of the book, Ada was doing doing an interesting science experiment and there was the promise of her studying birds. And then, it just gets too crazy and the interest in birds goes away completely until the end of the book when there are a bunch of doomsday facts. It does not flow well.

I am so excited to see more of The Questioneers adventures and now in chapter book format! Ada Twist is a great protagonist and I look forward to solving many more mysteries along with her.
