I'm guessing from what happens in this book, that it is the pivotal book of the series. This is spoilery, so don't read.

But Harry loses everything. Everything he ever was, everything he claimed to be, everything that made him HIM - he puts it up on the alter of sacrifice for his child. And he wins, but what is he at the end of the book? Delightfully, we never find out, due to the ending. I suspect that the ending is a run around some of the deal Harry made, and if it is... I don't think I will respect Butcher. But not having read the next book in the series, I will with hold judgement.

Damn fine book. Damn fine.

This book destroyed me.

In my opinion, [b:Changes|6585201|Changes (The Dresden Files, #12)|Jim Butcher|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1304027244s/6585201.jpg|6778696] feels different than all other the Dresden Files books, hence the title, probably.

I loved in medias res beginning - just like Harry Dresden, I was, like - WAIT, WHAT???

The plot was AMAZING, intricate, the story fast-paced, and Harry Dresden - brilliant and fun to be around, as always. And this was definitely the first book of the series where I teared up (at a certain moment involving violent inner struggles, cold weather, a knife, and a certain traitorous Winter Knight). And I felt the main hero's unbearable pain in every page of the book.

Changes is the most emotional book yet and that gets it a 5-star rating in my book.

Simple fabulous, couldn't put it down, the first true 5 star book in the series and the end .... Simply brilliant

Harry Dresden morphs into Liam Neeson from Taken. Only the dialog "I will find you &... I will kill you" was missing. A grand climax tying in elements from the past 11 books with poignant moments & a game changing end. A terrific read

The plot synopsis for this Dresden files entry seemed iffy to me - Harry's long-lost lover reveals they have a daughter in need of saving, how cliche - but it turned out to be both exciting and moving. The title does not lie - many things change in this one. I had fallen away from the series for a while after book 1, but got lured back by James Marsters' fantastic audiobook versions. Now I just wish I had waited longer to get caught up, so I didn't have to wait so long to find out what happens next! Argh.

Whoooooweee that was fun. But also

I'm just going to come right out and say it: I absolutely did not like this book.

It took me over a month and a half to read it, and I didn't enjoy a minute of it.

There were multiple factors involves. The first ...

(spoilers follow!)

Spoiler
Barnes & Noble, in their "infinite wisdom", posted the HUGE CLIFFHANGER from Changes as the tiny blurb in their email newsletter when Ghost Story came out. Yes, that's right. The first sentence told me that Harry died in Changes. HUGE FUCKING SPOILER.

Right then and there, I was pissed off. I wrote a rather nasty email to B&N, but they don't care obviously and I just got a canned reply. So I've vowed never to purchase from them again.

Secondly, the whole kid storyline annoys me. I don't like children, I'm childfree, and I can't and DON'T want to relate to what Harry is feeling, blahblahblah. This book was totally not written for me, and slogging through Harry sacrificing himself to save some 6 year old he doesn't even know just cause she's "his daughter" makes me roll my eyes.

Cool stuff:
- GOOD RIDDANCE TO SUSAN! HOLY SHIT FINALLY. I never liked her, and at least she is sacrificed for the good of everyone else.
- Martin being a double-crosser was great. Well played.
- McCoy as Harry's grandfather makes sense, but was a surprise.
- Odin!
- Chichen Itza was cool, the fights were AWESOME. About the only thing I enjoyed about this book.

Lame stuff:
- Harry losing his office, his apartment, breaking his back, etc. I mean, really? Was that all entirely necessary?
- Selling his soul to be the Winter Knight. Meh.
- The entire kid storyline as stated above.

I'm going to rate this book 2 stars. It's probably 2.5 for me, but it's definitely NOT a 3 at all.

UGH!

At this point, I can't decide if I want to bother with Ghost Story or not. I don't know if I can stand it.

Changes, is only one word in my mind describes this novel aptly to me and the word that comes to mind is, epic. My word this novel has everything the last ones did time ten! We have more action, more mystery, more plot twist and many important characters from past books making appearances in this novel.

I just love how the author hooks you from the very first. Some authors build up to the plot but Jim Butcher just throws it in your face from the very start. I believe I mentioned this about the last novel as well; the thought holds true for this novel as well.

In this novel we learn that Harry Dresden has a child, who has been kidnapped, with past lover whom got changed half changed into a vampire by a Red Court vampire; which is what started the war between them and the White Council in the first place.

I feel we have come full circle. Almost.

As I said, Susan. So obviously she is in Chicago again and brought along with her, Martin who works with her in an organization that is dedicated to ridding the world of the Red Court. Stating this I have to wonder if they fought other vampires as well such as the Black Court and White Court; or was it just the Red Court they were after? I suppose that makes sense since the organization is mostly compiled of people who are half-Red Court. But still, something to think about.

The main plot centers on Harry's daughter and getting her back from the Red Court vampires who have taken her before they pull off the plan they have for her.

We also have more plot concerning the White Council though and in the end I was left confused as to what is going on with them and I do hope this is something that is cleared up in the next novel.

More so the ending of the novel is very well done and I applaud the author for his craftiness with this major plot twist and look forward to picking up Ghost Story to see how he pulls it off.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who had read and liked the previous novels in this series as well as anyone who is looking for a good paranormal/urban fantasy read. Though again I do recommend reading the previous books in the series first as though we do get background information in the novels you I personally, someone else might feel otherwise though, do not think they could be read out of order without feeling a little confused.

Also I have to say this and it is unrelated to the novel mostly but that description the "Long ago," really reminds me of the beginning of the Disney Hercules movie; which I love...
