Trigger warning for rando nword drop -- these books are old and often outdated but this one really caught me off guard. Otherwise (sigh) a lovely murder -- not sure if im getting better at solving these though or if the answer was more obvious this time....

I’ve never read this one before. Great mystery. Lots of racist language unfortunately.

Unfortunately this was not a good Poirot novel. The framing device of Hasting's introduction was a strange choice and it made the story feel repetitive. The murder itself just wasn't that intriguing and while the book was still very readable, it felt a little long. Also the title seemed to have nothing to do with the story. I think I've still got a few good Poirot's left but I know I've read most of the best ones now.

i went into this assuming the "dumb witness" was the dog, and i was disappointed to find that he played no role in detecting the murderer. he did appear a lot, though.

pretty standard hastings-era poirot. hugh fraser reads the audiobook, which i enjoyed as a fan of the pbs series.

entirely unnecessary use of n-word.
