A thick book, but a smooth writing style. A lot is happening, but it is all a bit flat. The story is loosely based on the lives of famous people in the 1920s and 30s (I recognised for instance a Howard Hughes. and Jean Harlow). 2½ star.

pure trashy goodness. and although he was definitely an asshole i managed to find the protagonist jonas cord sympathetic and interesting which is what sustained me through all 650+ pages.

OK, so the novel is dreck - but it's absolutely propulsive dreck. Reading it is like that giant bucket of popcorn at the movies, drenched in butter-flavored oil that once you've started eating is nearly impossible to stop .

I feel a great sense of accomplishment in finishing this book like it's not even the longest I've read but it's sooo heavy!! I really loved the characters in this, Nevada, David, Rosa, and Jennie were my faves and their individual stories were the best part about this book!

Patchy pulp - but good

The story waxed and waned a bit but the characters were interesting most of the time. Definitely pulp fiction but it's easy to see why it' was so popular.
