I liked this more than I expected. It was a sweet and realistic romance to me, so I wasn't at all disappointed with the ending. In fact, I loved the ending. Maybe it was because Shaw didn't really push the Eliza/Higgins pairing. I couldn't exactly tell if either of them had romantic feelings for the other. It was comical and enjoyable, always a good combination for a book/play. I plan to read My Fair Lady soon afterwards, but right now, other things are occupying my time. :(

I do not know how to feel about this book.

First of all this is a play and reading a play is always tricky, because that is not how it is primarily meant to be consumed. I was a bit surprised by the lengthy prelude. Then I was surprised how insufferable Higgins was in this book. I knew about the difference in the endings (for which I applaud), but I was caught off guard by the conclusion to what I thought was a great ending, that kind of destroyed my imagined ending (and no it was not a happy ending for the tyrant of this book) and made my sorry for Eliza not to through some of her threats. However I understand the need to clear up the misunderstanding of the two heroes ending up together. (I guess causal humiliation of others is not an obstacle to being romantic hero to some people.)

Also I have to mention that this book was written in the 1912 and it is a take on a Greek myth, but the notions in it are ahead of its time. We should treat all people (especially women) like they are human beings. We should also stop praising men for being decent human beings, but that would be way too much for a book this old. Still an interesting read.
