I really like the story, but I found the play itself ridiculously hard to read.
How did I not read this sooner? It had me in stitches. GBS is a genius ahead of his time.

Una de las cosas que menos me gustan de leer obras de teatro son las acotaciones y Bernard Shaw es conocido por sus EXTENSAS acotaciones. Si fuera una novela no me importaría porque hace descripciones de habitaciones o sentimientos muy detalladas, pero en una obra de teatro leída no me gustan tanto.
Los primeros actos entretenidos, pero los últimos no tanto ya que se me hacía bola y tenía bastantes ganas de terminar la obra.En general una obra normalita, un poco dificil de entender al principio por el acento de Eliza pero con un final bastante diferente a la mayoría de obras de la época.

The only good part about this play is that it brought about My Fair Lady
As is seeming to be Shaw's pattern the end sucks. The end to My Fair Lady (the musical based off of this show) is pretty bad, but this is just terrible. I see why they expanded what they did in the musical. Fortunately my version of the play (I'm not sure if all versions have this) had a follow-up section after the curtain that explained what happens in the many years following the play to the majority of the characters. This adds so much and makes them so very much more like real people--always something that I look for in theatre. Loved this and wish that more plays and books and everything did stuff like this.
But aside from that altogether unsatisfying end, the rest of the play is very good. Very similar to the musical in some places and wholly different in others. It's interesting to note that here Eliza has a really good ear and is essentially a savant at piano. It makes her truly fascinating and therefore we understand more of Higgins' and Pickering's interest in her.
I personally loved how Higgins and Pickering kind of made her into their little play-thing, as is pointed out by Higgins' mother. Higgins and Pickering have more similar personalities here save for their manners and that makes them more sensible friends.
Overall, this is of course a classic and for that reason alone everyone should read it. Just know that the end is disappointing, especially if you're going to see the show rather than read it.

I always forget the ending of My Fair Lady, and reading the original reminds me of why. As Shaw states, this is a romance where our heroine does not marry the hero (and thank goodness she doesn't!) You can find out all of the denouements in an epilogue of Shaw's, but the focus is not who ends up with whom, but how Eliza becomes her own women in the midst of a story of outwardly driven transformation.

I didn't really read the drama itself entirely but the version we're performing at school, so I'm not going to rate it.
I can not say how good the story objectively is but I like playing Colonel Pickering a lot (and you can not convince me that there isn't gay subtext between him and Professor Higgins... ;)).
