A decent book, but there is way too much hype surrounding it. I see absolutely no reason to not discuss the plot with people who haven't read it yet.
I can't get on the Little Bee train. Sarah, one of the main characters was just a horrible person and it was hard to feel anything for her. Would have been better if it was only about Little Bee's life.
compelling, sad, eye opening, and redemptive... and, that's all I'll give you.
Well written. Love certain phrases and moments. Kinda sad....
A decent book overall but quite slow. At times I found myself wondering when it was going to over, and when reading for pleasure on vacation, that's not a good sign.
I am still thinking about this book, still forming my opinions, still reeling from the transition from the book's world back to my own world. Maybe I will revise this review after some contemplation and discussion. For now, I will say this... it is intense. There were parts of this book that so completely drew me in that I lost all sense of time. However, there were also parts that felt disjointed or didn't make sense. There were passages that had me rolling my eyes -- for instance, turns of phrase that felt like the author was trying too hard to be 'literary,' or times when he was trying too hard to understand a woman's thoughts. Other times, I was amazed at the real, raw emotions he was able to portray, and the delicate dance between characters. More good stuff than bad stuff, so I would definitely recommend this book to others -- but not quite as life-changing as the book jacket implies.
Little Bee’s portions of the book were beautifully written. Her character had a unique way of looking at the world. Sarah’s portions were difficult for me to get through. I felt like I just couldn’t like any characters besides Little Bee and I struggle when I’m not rooting for characters. A bit disappointed with the end and I wouldn’t call it a “truly special book,” as the jacket suggests. I do appreciate the honest examination of detention centers and refuges. All in all, I liked parts, I really disliked others. I would say 2.5 stars.
I'm glad I took the time to read it, or I might not have liked it. Seems like a good book club choice. I really enjoyed the distinct voices of the characters and the non-linear plot. Most interesting, though, is the fact that in other countries the title is "The Other Hand," which gives a completely different emphasis.
