One passage in this book will stay with me for a long time, and it made the book worth reading. It's about finding beauty in the marks left behind by horrific events.
A really good book. Quite heavy in nature...in fact I kind of did my best to tune some of the overall weight of the book out. But the writing is beautiful and the subject matter is a very important one.
My favorite line from this book (and goes on the list of all time favorite lines) has to do with scars being beautiful... because they are a sign of survival. Paraphasing here... Scars don't form on those who die.
I'm looking forward to the book club discussion around this book. I had picked it up once or twice before but it never caught my attention. I'm glad I read it but wouldn't say it's one of the best books ever written.
Ideally I'd give this 3.5 stars but I'll default up to four stars because the premise was interesting and Little Bee's story so compelling. I felt that this book could have been so much stronger had we just heard it from Little Bee's perspective. The retelling of her story (through the eyes of Sarah) seemed to dilute the gravity of the situation in Nigeria. Bee's perspective was unique and she embodied this sense of enternal optimism (the Little Bee). I absolutely could not stand the very flat character of Lawrence and think the book would have been far better had he not been quite as involved, or more of an outlying character.
In any event, it was an interesting read and I'm looking forward to hearing what others have to say about it.

This book was very well written, but it was also very hard to read. There are a lot of hardships in this book and very few reprieves between them. It's definitely worth the read, but don't expect a heart-warming story out of it.
