I’m someone who struggles so deeply to understand what the hell is going one when I read fantasy novels so I always feel like my opinions are partially invalid but like the book entertained me so really thats all that matters.

Also, I love a good story romantic subplot with loads of yearning. And I’m truly living for this kingdom being run by the fruitiest little twink bard to ever live.

This was a really cute queer romantasy read.

I thought it established character dynamics very well. Had well placed, non-info dump world building. The characters were interesting and felt unique. Relationships felt realistic. On top of all of the side characters were interesting and stood out. I really liked how this felt like an older story in some aspects too. Overall it was simple and fun.

However some aspects were lacking. I wish the plot had a bit more happening and the romance had a bit more time to grow. Some plot twist lacked some punch, but weren’t awful. It also had a bit of a problem with telling over showing. Aside from that my only major note is: Don’t use lamp oil as lubricant for the love of god.

It was a nice read and I recommend it to anyone that’s looking for a simple, fun story.

Gary Furlong's narration was wonderfully immersive. I thought the narrative took a little while to pick up, but the back half of the book was very engaging.

King x his Prime fantasy with a bit of murder and mystery! What else could one want. More romance than plot, which I usually don’t like all that much but it wasn’t too much for me.
This was a lovely read. Very enjoyable. The pacing was just right and the characters were lovely. No notes.

The biggest reason for my enjoyment of this audiobook is the narrator Gary Furlong.  He is so fantastic at acting out the scenes so if a character was crying or dying or angry, he acted the whole scene out so wonderfully if felt like I was actually there.

I don't think this is particularly innovative or exceptional in any way because it really is just your standard high fantasy kingdom story about who gets the throne and revolts with a romance thrown in.  It is just fun though because it's so immersive and because I love this narrato  a lot so I think that added to the immersion for me.

I really enjoyed it as Zavrius and Balen as a couple. This isn't a romance with fantasy but rather a fantasy with romance so we didn't get as much of their relationship as I would've liked.

My big complaints though are that I feel like this is too long-winded in its descriptions. We would get 2 or 3 pages of descriptions of a new town setting or a new room or a new building and I just found it to be such an inundation of information and I couldn't picture any of it anyway so I found it was skipping forward a lot of times.  This along with the fact that some of the chapters were an hour-long and all of them generally too long meant that I just found it to be slow in an unenjoyable way for a bit in the middle.

 I also wish that
instead of Theo being the sibling to come back and  fight for the throne, it had been one of the sister since we never got to know any of them really. I think it could've been an interesting dynamic to see hoe they handled Zav on the throne as they also went to kill him but the sisters were never supposed to be on the throne, Theo was. I want to know how they would've balanced the war-mongering brother and dad they learned from and their new found possible claim tot the throne.

Oh my goodness. I went into this book with high expectations, and they were all met. Haddon did a great job of world building and fleshing out his characters. I was rooting for them the whole time. It was a complex, multifaceted story that kept me on the edge of my seat. And there was just the right amount of romance. Amazing story, I got my friend to buy the book for himself too!

Seth Haddon is going on my author watchlist. this debut was decent — more than decent, the universe and characters were so intriguing and unique. i only wish there was more time to flesh out the world and dive into the politics, the religions, and the magic system more.

i already noted above the lack of depth to the world, but the romance was unevenly paced and at times confused me. i loved the relatuonship between Balen and Zavrius, but i would have preferred more context about their connection (and break up) and a more consistent dynamic throughout the novel.
once they rekindled their love, things made more sense to me. but the first ~200 pages needed some assistance.

for those seeking ~spice~ please note there were only two explicit sex scenes, plenty of flirting, and quite a few raunchy punchlines.

i would recommend this book to queer readers who love DnD and scandalous romances. (the himbo knight + sassy, dark prince element was right up my alley.) anyone looking for really cool magic systems and wanting to dip their toes into political intrigue stories would also enjoy.

overall, i really liked the book, but i can’t deny it was lacking in the ways a first draft might be. it read much like a fanfiction that needed another round of beta reading.

I love the concept but it felt very much like a debut novel in execution
