About halfway through the book to the end, the main character shows disdain and disgust at homosexuality, but is accepting that others are that way. There was also a period of essentially reverse conversation therapy mindset. I think it might have been intended as a means of showing how the returning soldiers return to a different society than they left, and fitting into an unfamiliar society is challenging. The sci-fi and space combat aspects of the story were all pretty good.

While not the most homophobic sci-fi of the 70s, repeatedly this book brings up how weird and strange it is that being homosexual is accepted in the future and even encouraged. Mild spoilers to follow detailing probably the most egregious example in my opinion.

A character who is a gay man (being homosexual is seen as the norm in this future, with heterosexuality being the "odd" thing) decides to ask a powerful being to "reverse his polarity" and make him heterosexual so that he may fit in with the "breeder" planets. In the epilogue, it is revealed he has married a woman.

I don't think the author hates gay people and I believe that he probably meant well, but, as all stories eventually are, this one is very dated.

I know this book is old and a sci-fi classic, but the author makes it clear that he really doesn’t like gay people and it was hard for me to get past the blatant homophobia.

Extremely sexist and bigoted. Use of allegory covers up disturbing issues with the content. Implied rape. Heavy sexism and homophobia on the part of the author.
