Definitely not the best iteration of this series. It is simply not the medium for it, all the fun and creative aspects found on the original game are pretty much stripped away or blandly copied. I wish there had been more liberty with the art, but I won't necessarily blame the author for that was most likely out of their control.

Though, I did settle on giving it an extra star for giving me a good laugh over the good amount of disastrous hands drawn in this volume! In a way, I feel slightly better about the way I draw hands in my own art sldksflfkml

Well I didn’t expect to get so invested in a manga. I can’t believe what cliffhanger it left on. My kids play the game and thought I’d like to read the manga based on what it’s about. Maybe I should listen to them more often.

Okay, this graphic novel is too much fun!  DANGANRONPA is the story of 15 kids who get selected to go to Hope's Peak through a lotto.  They are the best of the best.  We have the best baseball star, the best swimmer, the best computer programmer, etc etc.  They think they have really made it in this cool new school... but then they meet their new robot teddy bear principal, Monokuma.  And he has just informed them the only way to graduate is to kill a student, not get caught, and outsmart the others in the trial of the victim.  WHAT!?  You read that right!  It's such a blast, the characters are compelling, Monokuma is a sadistic treat of a characters, and I cannot wait for more in this series!  We started with 15 and this first volume leaves us with 12...

I absolutely adored Danganronpa as a video game. I didn't play it myself, but I've watched the first game fully through gaming videos on youtube. It was such a unique and creepy concept. I couldn't stop watching. I know there is a second game and also an anime, but I haven't tried those (yet). Now, there is manga coming out. This first volume was really good. It didn't differ much (if at all) from the video game, but it still made me laugh and tear up a bit. It's been a while since I experienced the game, so it was nice to be reunited with all of these characters and our favourite bear. Honestly, if you're into dystopian books, I think you should give this manga a try. It's about all of these special teenagers trying to survive in a school building they can't get out of. The only way to 'graduate' is to kill one of the others and don't get caught. It's harder than it sounds, but so good.

I'm actually very familiar with the franchise, I was really into the games a couple of years ago. I still think very fondly of them. There is a big cast of character but they each have a distinct personality and quirks.

I love the concept of a high school that enrolls the most talented student from a certain field. Then the whole twist with a killing game and its rules. It's quite serious and dark at times, but it remains satirical.

All the murder cases are very interesting. My favourite part is gathering clues and then analyzing everything in the class trial.

I get that this is a different format, but it's still way to fast paced for me. In the games, there are free time events in which you get to know the characters you choose so you develop this connection. You find out more about them so it's more heartbreaking when one of them eventually dies or is revealed as the blackened.

This is still one of my favourite franchises, the plot twists are so good (especially later on in the game – the mastermind for example is such an interesting character imo) and the contrast between hope and despair is very well done.

I would recommend to anyone interested that they play (or watch a playthrough as I did because I'm not a gamer whatsoever) the game. There are so many details that were left out or glanced over in the manga and the characters feel a lot more likeable.
