Much like The Good Time Boys, I've been reading this book with my class at school. Unlike TGTB, I loved it. It took us a week longer than it should have (according to the teaching plan, which is unrealistic) but the kids were enthralled. Remember I teach in an urban London school that is 95% none white. They freaked out at the Devonshire girl meeting a black man (an American soldier named Adolphus) for the first time. They were engrossed in the real place setting, the fact 'operation tiger' really happened, and the character relationships. They wrote some amazing book reviews. Taken from these I can tell you they loved the humour, the love story and the cat, Tips! Lots of reviews say it's not really a children's book. These guys are 7-9. They definitely needed lots of discussion about the real life aspects and the society of the time, but they could definitely still access it. My favourite Michael Morpurgo book so far.

I don't remember the details of this book much but I remember the feeling I had when reading it and it was a feeling of deep love.

Lovely story within a story of a girl's love of her cat and the love between a boy and his grandmother, ser against the backdrop of the preparation for the D-day landings in southern England.
