A charming little story, told mostly through diary excerpts, of some of the aspects of World War II and D-Day that we never hear about. Michael (aka Boowie) receives a package from his grandmother not long after his grandfather's death from MS, the contents of which will explain the reason for the scandalous thing she has just done. The contents are her diary excerpts from the lead up to D-Day which involve the cat she loved and their little town in Devon on the coast being co-opted for a training ground for the Normandy landings.

the writing was beautiful but the story is legit trash im sorry.

Its set in world war two. Despite a cat being on the cover, it's not just about a cat. I didnt know people were forced to leave their homes due to soldiers getting ready for D-Day. It may seem silly to risk your life for a cat but that's how some people feel. Simple short story
dark emotional mysterious reflective fast-paced

This was my favourite book ever in like year 6 and I read it a million times no matter how depressed I inevitably get after reading it

3 1/2, I think. Which is nothing to sneeze at. Slight but effective and you know me and World War II stories. Bonus points for making me go, "Oh, hey, I know all about that from watching Foyle's War."

It was soooo sweet. I love the ending, and how Morpurgo hints that all hope is lost and then brings back hope again. Also, I like how he introduces it as a story from a grandma to grandson and then has the rest as the story. A wonderful story!

Not going to lie this isn’t my favourite Michael Morpurgo book I was going to give it 3/5 as the main character was very irritable and overall I just wasn’t blown away but the story. However the ending certainly put it back in the runnings! Absolutely 10/10 ending. Therefore overall 4/5

I loved the plot. It was an emotional rollercoaster but it was great!
