Top 10 grossest book I've ever read in my life. It made me want to vomit and was so sick and twisted. But I found it incredibly interesting because of how messed up it was.

This may be my current favorite all around novel. There are so many things at play here that are just so unavoidably interesting and curious. I wouldn't say you go through the same descent as the main character because that's reductive of that the book is doing in general, but it's hard not to notice yourself carrying the same sort of nonchalance for the increasingly brutal ongoings, it's hard not to be transfixed frankly and there's much to think about.

Way too horrific. I love a good scary story, but this was stomach-churning. Not for the faint of heart.

An easy read but lacking substance, a good junk food book.

Despite the marketing, it is clear the author does not understand what a cult is as the beliefs of the "cult" in question are never explored.

The book relies heavily on the shock value of amputation, treating the act and its results as a freak show to be gawked at.
The book assumes the reader shares in the protagonist's shock and horror towards amputation but never explores why someone might feel that way.

The scene in which a stripper takes off her prosthetics to the protagonist's horror is both gratuitous and horribly ableist. The scene is never brought up again so its point in the story is beyond me.

The only redeeming quality of the story is Brian Evenson's writing style. It's an easy and evocative reading experience, I just wish his skills had been put to use in a better story.

I LOVED THIS NOVELLA!! The only downside to this story is that Evenson writes minimalistic literature, and sometimes I wanted him to go into more detail. I'll give this novella a well-deserved 4.75 ⭐ out of 5. I can't wait to read his other works!!
