This book is like a punch in the guts, in the most necessary way. As someone who tries to pay attention to what's going on in the world, I've been aware of racism and injustice, but this book was an excellent example of how things like institutional racism are baked into every layer of our so-called justice system. The work that Stevenson and the EJI have done and continue to do is amazing and powerful, and it's heartbreaking that it's necessary because of the way the system works.

Extremely difficult to read about these tragedies. This is a non fiction horror story. Incredibly emotionally enraging, even considering this is what I studied in college. It never gets easier to hear the more you read or learn about it.
You can't effectively fight abusive power, poverty, inequality, illness, oppression, or injustice and not be broken by it. (289)
It's hard to read about this, but it's even harder to do this kind of work. The fact that it needs to be done in the first place is incredibly problematic and heartbreaking.

This book really opened my eyes to just how institutionally racist our criminal justice system really is. It's a must-read for everyone.

This book left me with mixed feelings. On the one hand I was pissed that laws and courts not only allowed but encouraged juries to convict children, the poor, mentally ill, and minorities to be sentenced to death for non-capitol crimes. I thought these levels of racism and bigotry were from the distant path but they actually happened during my life time no that long ago.

But on the other hand I was cheered by the fact that so many changes have taken place recently that recognized that children are children and shouldn't be treated as adults nor incarcerated with them. That the mentally ill can no longer be put to death for crimes the don't even understand. But there is still a lot of work to be done on how sentencing for the poor is so much harsher than sentencing for the rich.

A completely enthralling book for everyone. If you watched "Making a Murderer" on Netflix and thought WTF how does this happen then this is a book you need to read.

Everyone should read this. Powerful and insightful and painful all at the same time. I couldn’t put it down even though it made me crazy angry.

Wow. I learned and I thought deeply and I cried and I was moved to talk about it to anyone who would let me. I've not seen a more reasoned and compassionate argument for change in our "justice" system than this. A must read and re-read.
