Wanna feel some hope about our awful justice system? This is a great read.
I went through a massive range of emotions, but have finished feeling like we have to find solutions sooner than later to fix this.

A gut-wrenching MUST read book. I couldn't put it down, even though it brought me to tears in many places. Such an important inside look at the ugly history of the criminal justice system balanced by the beautiful hopefulness and humanity of the people whose stories are told in this book.
Compelling, heartening, tragic, and emotionally engaging. I have put off reading this one because I thought it would be sad, and it was. However as Mr. Stevenson clearly demonstrates repeatedly it is that acknowledging the brokenness of people is the beginning of hope, particularly we we begin to see ourselves in these stories rather than separate from them. I cried several times, but I also smiled and laughed with the characters in this book because he has a very gentle way of talking about the people involved in the fight for reform. Also he is incredibly even handed when talking about the systemic injustices for a legacy of racism in criminal justice, almost to a fault as he dismantles arguments clearly and thoughtfully. Really compelling in all the ways, and reminded me why I like to read, to open my mind, and my heart.
Amazing stories and much needed eye opening to our capital punishment system and judicial system.

I’m so glad i finally read this. It’s so horrendous to see how poorly humans treat each other and how much our country is set up with the goal of increasing profits for the rich and locking away or murdering the poor and other marginalized groups. It is beautiful that there are people out there like Bryan Stevenson dedicating his life to fighting for justice for incarcerated people but at the same time it’s so disheartening to truly see how bureaucratic the legal system is and many barriers there are to fairness and how many people support the prison system. Truly a heartbreaking book.
