Never has a book so profoundly effected me as this one did. Read and reread and recommended to everyone who asks for books ideas. I follow EJI and donate to their cause as I can. There are not many other books that I have read, other than Nickeled and Dimed, that showed me Exactly how privileged I am.

Should be mandatory reading in US schools. Bryan Stevenson shines a light on the shameful thread that leads from colonization and slavery to present-day challenges in America.

I think this should be required reading for us all. People finally seem to be talking about mass incarceration and its impact on families and society, but this book is an in-your-face reminder of how terrible the criminal justice system can be for the most vulnerable people.

A must read.

I think this book only uncovers the tip of the iceberg in terms of prison problems in the US and also the death penalty. From reading this, there's just so many cases out there and so little help available.

4.5/5 Two acts contributed to me wanting to become a lawyer. The first was when I was thirteen and read To Kill a Mockingbird. The second came years later when the justice system failed someone close to me. I wanted to become a lawyer to help people that were incapable of helping themselves and I wanted to fight for people who never had anyone stand in their corner before. So when Stevenson mentioned how young generations of law students were inspired by Atticus Finch, the reality hit me hard because that is me. I now hope an even younger generation of to-be law students and future law enforcement officials all around the world pick up not only TKAMB but also Just Mercy. I am very aware from studying Law and the Criminal Justice System for nearly 8 years, how bad the justice system can fail all kinds of people, so the cases and the information given in this book didn't surprise or shock me as much as it did other people, who's reviews I've read and videos I have watched because they have limited knowledge on the subject. And rightly so. It should shock people. It should surprise people. And it should sicken people. It sickens me, still. I've had countless people come up to me and many people I know over the years and as soon as you say "Oh, I study/studied Law" immediately they ask "I'm guessing the moneys good, huh?" No. In the future I'll hand them a copy of this book and maybe then they'd understand how it requires you to sell a part of your soul. All the majority of us want to do is help people. Just like the people described in this book. That's all I've ever wanted to do. Thank you, Mr. Stevenson, for inspiring many of us to follow in your footsteps.
