This book was so good! It was much different than what I expected and the storyline was different than what I’m used to but it was such a good read! I know it’s a book of fiction but it made me wonder how often this type of thing happened/happens in real life.

Brendan Slocumb again delivers a book centering on the music world. In SYMPHONY OF SECRETS, present-day professor Bern Hendricks is contracted to finalize a recently uncovered opera long thought to be lost. Bern has long revered the composer Frederick Delaney, but upon close inspection, he uncovers the actual creator of this and other works that have been attributed to Delaney was actually Josephine Reed, a neurodivergent black woman. The foundation is motivated to keep such a revelation from being revealed.

Slocumb reveals the lengths people will take to preserve power, money, and reputation. Does the average individual have any chance to set things right? This was a fast listen that kept pulling me in, a welcome distraction.

This book was wonderful. Racism, sexism, neurodivergence, Autism, music! Just wow. You fall in love with the characters of this story. Josephine is so unique. The way Brendan Slocum managed to write all the unique features of Josephine’s neurodivergent brain was really phenomenal. I listened to this book and was on pins and needles the whole story!!

A bookclub pick for the month. I was really rooting for this one after Violin Conspiracy, but it didn't hold. I was invested in the past storyline with Freddy and Josephine, and wish Slocumb spent more time developing those characters and giving them more nuance. The modern day half fully went careening off the rails in a made-for-TV spy thrillerish way and then actually wrapped up too quickly, not giving enough due to the justice we were hoping for for Josephine. Some great ideas here with some better editing and plot reworking
