I didn't love this in total as much as I loved The Violin Conspiracy, but I loved Josephine more than basically I have ever loved another fictional character.
Truth be told, this book isn’t what I thought it would be- it exceeds any and every idea I had. I was outright angry whenever I had to put it down to do something else. I do not have words for how good this one is- utterly brilliant storytelling, captivatingly intense plot, earnestly rooted in justice and truth, and then, there’s Josephine, oh you sweet, gracious, and impeccable musical genius. I will never forget this book.
4.5 stars-I am becoming a huge fan of Slocumb. I love how he takes something artistic, like composing music, and gives it a suspenseful storyline with amazing character representation. Told from dual timelines, the story unspools before you as the main character is working to uncover if a world renowned composer actually wrote his music or if he stole it. I couldn’t put it down!

I love Brendan Slocumb! I know little to nothing about music writing and his whole world but I am totally intrigued by his novels! They are so detailed, I don't know how he writes them in the timeframe he does! Seems like it would take years! As much as I learned Bern and Ebony, Josephine was my favorite! I don't always like stories that switch between past and present, but I loved both stories!!! And couldn't wait to get back to Josephine's music writing and how her mind works!!! Also first time in my life I found myself not feeling recasted that someone offed themselves. Fred was a horrible human being! Lol
Symphony of Secrets is every bit as wonderfully written as Slocumb's The Violin Conspiracy. It is a page-turner filled with danger and suspense and beautifully written. But more than anything it is powerful commentary about prejudice and privilege.

An amazing read.
I feel like this was even better than Violin Conspiracy! But I loved both books for how they highlighted the author's knowledge of the world of music from performing, record labels, publishing, researching, and academia.
What made this book amazing to me was that it was a mix of genres that ran together smoothly: mystery, literature, and historical fiction. It was amazing.
