Really 4.5 stars but I’m rounding up
Parts of the current day story didn’t ring true to me but I really enjoyed the book

DNF.
From the first chapter it was too predictable.

This is a “Did not Finish” at least for now. Just can’t get into a fixtion book that goes into this much detail about a musical composition. Just not feeling it I guess

Mediocre white man takes credit for brilliant black woman. Future black scholars are having none of it. Every page was brilliant. Brendan Slocumb did it again!

4.5 stars rounded down but may be rounded up eventually. I really enjoyed this book!

The blurb gave away the first half of the book, making it so nothing was surprising or intriguing. And I found even the things in the story that weren’t spelled out by the synopsis, I could already see exactly what was going to happen beat for beat. This makes for an uninteresting mystery. Also, the characters were two dimensional with just one or two over repeated quirks to try to make them interesting. Bern with his ironed clothes, and him and eboni’s obsession with pizza. There were sentences and ideas repeated over again just paragraphs or pages later and it felt like this book hadn’t gone through its final editing process yet. The reason it’s getting two stars is because I can see what the author was trying to do with this story and the concept itself is interesting. The execution just wasn’t gonna keep me around.

Took me a bit to get into it, but then I couldn’t stop. Slow, detailed build is worth it. Lovely “Author’s Note” (be sure to read it)

Thoughts

After being wowed by The Violin Conspiracy I was so excited to read this one! And I think I might have enjoyed this one even more.

It was a bit slow to start but once you get into the story you are hooked. It was hard to stop listening because I was so curious as to where it was going to go.

It really didn’t seem like a thriller for most of it and then it got to a part and I was like oooh this is it. And I think because it isn't that tradition thriller format and you are learning so much about the characters you really connect with them and it hurts when bad things happen to them.

I really enjoyed this and I cannot wait to read whatever is next from this author.
