Loved the subject of music. Interesting mystery and I liked how it went between the mystery subjects and the mystery solvers.
Omg I want this to be adapted into a limited series so bad! I’ve already started casting it in my mind. Slocumb is such an amazing writer, vivid without being overly long-winded. I know NOTHING about music but his books are always a page turner for me. The plot of this book went places I couldn’t have imagined and it resonated so many emotions in me. One of the best books I’ve read this year.
4.5 stars. What a thriller of a book! Who knew a story about a lost symphony could keep you on the edge of your seat?! One of the best books of 2023 so far.
I haven’t written a review for a book in so long (despite reading a bunch lately that I truly, truly enjoyed), but I couldn’t NOT write one for this. This book is nothing less than EXCELLENT. It’s one of the most unique books I’ve ever come across and explores a narrative that is so important while introducing characters I have not often read about (Black neurodivergent woman in the 1920s). 10/10 recommend (lowkey changed my perspective for what i would rate other books I read this year) and will now be going back to read Brendan’s other book!

Great Book. Deep but powerful and showed how righting a wrong can take time but, if you continue it can definitely make a difference. Although, there were many sad parts, they demonstrated how many people are forced through a situation that occurred because of evil ways.
Wow! I loved this book. I was completely absorbed by both storylines. I was yelling at the characters in the book like they can hear me. What an incredible story, and more timely than ever. I love Josephine Reed and how she hears the sounds of the world and how she processes the sensory overload of those sounds. I could relate to her in that way. I don’t normally feel such devotion to a character immediately like I did with that of Josephine. I also appreciated the shout out to Ray Macmillan early on in the book having read the author’s other great book The Violin Conspiracy. Slocumb writes and speaks to my core and my hatred of injustice and exploitation of others especially through bullying. The way Delaney (both the foundation and the composer) thinks the music is just theirs and theirs alone. Oooh. I was fully ready to jump into the words of the book and help Bern and Eboni.
Listening to a story that might otherwise go overlooked really resonated with me. There are so many stories like this from people within marginalized communities that have for generations been ignored or passed off as someone else’s.

Fascinating read. Lots of tension with a good mystery, going back and forth in time. I don't know a lot about music, but that didn't keep me from enjoying this book. Characters are strong and fascinating and well-developed. Very good book.
4.5 Stars
The only thing that kept this from a full 5 stars for me was the fact that I thought there were just a couple loose ends for me, and the fact that there was also such a perfect ending. Don't get me wrong, I wanted that ending, but it felt a tad unrealistic.
Other than that I CONSUMED this book. I read it so fast, and I thought about it every second between reading. It was a wonderfully written painful story. I highly recommend it, and even if you don't have a huge connection with music, this will resonate with you! I'm going to be reading everything Brendan Slocumb has to offer from here on out.
