Wow, this one really surprised me. One of the most gripping novels I've read in a long time. The characters really pulled me in, and I became completely emotionally involved in their lives. The plot was very well designed, providing lots of tension and kept me turning the pages. I'll be thinking about this one for some time to come and will most definitely be looking into this author's previous novel.

Some parts of this book I really enjoyed and others I didn’t so much. Overall, I think some of the story set in the present was a bit far fetched. It would be a lot more realistic to be trapped in bureaucratic/administrative BS with threatening paperwork than what really happened. Also, I thought the love story seemed forced and unnecessary. I sensed no chemistry from those two characters. I almost think it would have been better if it stuck to the past timeline, or at least showed more of it, and didn’t necessarily switch back and forth quite as often. I definitely needed less of the present timeline toward the end of the book, as I think I liked the book more at the beginning than I did at the end and I’m more frustrated by the present story.

I thought this book was riveting. It was darker than I expected, and I wish I had been a little more prepared for that. The main plot line was engaging and I was on the edge of my seat for a good portion of the book.
